    Donna asks…

Please help me to diagnose these diseases for anatomy class?

Tim is a high school football player, but he is having difficulty performing on the field because he tires easy. His coach is also becoming irritated, as it seems Tim is always making a quick trip to the bathroom. When the athletic trainer realizes that Tim is drinking more water than the other athletes, he suggests that Tim see his physician for a physical with a urinalysis. What is the athletic trainer suspicious of and why?

Your newborn son was circumcised today. It has been 6 hours since the procedure, yet his wound is still oozing blood. You know this is abnormal because you have an older son who was also circumcised

You’ve begun to notice changes in your college roommate. She seems to always be tired, yet she gets 9 hours of sleep a night and her skin appears pale. She has become very health conscious, drinks several glasses of water daily and has been following a vegan diet for six months. What might be wrong with her?

You are a general practice doctor conducting a routine physical on a 48 year old woman. Betty claims to be in good general health as she “feels good” but you have some concerns. Betty is overweight by about 50 pounds, smokes a pack of cigarettes a day, and doesn’t exercise regularly. She has a demanding, high-stress job working 60 hours a week as a trader on Wall Street. Her job is so time-consuming, that every day, Betty eats fast food that is high in fat and sodium. Betty’s parents both died in their 50’s, of heart disease. In addition to heart disease, what disease are you concerned that Betty might have?

You are an ER doctor caring for Trent who has been admitted to the hospital with chest pain. He has smoked 2 packs of cigarettes daily for 25 years, has hypertension, works as an air traffic controller, and his father died of a heart attack at the age of 51. Trent noticed his pain early in the day but ignored it. The pain became a crushing sensation and spread down his left arm. When he passed out, he coworkers called 911 and he was transported to the hospital. What do you suspect is causing Trent’s symptoms?

You are a pediatrician volunteering at a low-income health clinic. A young mother has brought her 10 year-old son, Joey, in to be examined, as she is concerned about his vision. You determine that his vision is normal, but complete a physical exam anyway. While you are listening to his heart, you notice an unusual “swishing” sound. You continue to gather information from the mother and learn that Joey had to repeat the first grade because he missed so much school with various illnesses. It seemed as though Joey always had a severe sore throat, swollen glands, and a couple times, even a red rash on the skin. What do you suspect is causing Joey’s symptoms?

Derrick is getting a routine physical to be cleared to compete as a college athlete. Derrick shares with the physician that he has just recovered from a strange form of the flu. He had a fever, headache, aches, sore throat, and felt tired, but never had any gastrointestinal issues. When the physician’s questions begin to inquire about Derrick sexual activity, Derrick becomes offended. What does the physician suspect?

David, a 15 year old teen-ager, has been brought to you, a pediatrician, by his father. David’s father is concerned because David has contracted several different colds during the past nine months. As soon as he recovers from one cold, he comes down with another. The colds always involve a mild but persistent sore throat, nasal congestion, swollen and sore glands and occasionally chest congestion followed by a cough. Other than the colds, David appears to be in good health. These illnesses have causes David to miss school regularly and his grades are suffering. When you examine David’s throat, you observe red, irritated and inflamed tissues. Why is David getting sick so often?

    Tammy J. answers:

These are guesses. I’m not medically trained, but my wife is a doctor and I used to help her revise for her exams…

“Tim [...] tires easy. [...] quick trip to the bathroom [...] more water”

    Diabetes.

“Your newborn son was circumcised today. [...] oozing blood.”

Blood clotting problem and cruel parents.

“college roommate [...] skin appears pale [...] vegan diet for six months.”

    Anaemia / general malnutrition.

“Betty [...] overweight [...] smokes [...] doesn’t exercise [...] high-stress job [...] eats fast food that is high in fat and sodium.”

    Hypertension.

“Trent [...] chest pain. [...] smoked [...] hypertension, [...] pain became a crushing sensation and spread down his left arm.”

    Myocardial infarction.

“Joey [...] his vision is normal [...]“swishing” sound [...] various illnesses [...] severe sore throat, swollen glands, and a couple times, even a red rash on the skin.”

The swishing sound is a heart murmur. Not sure of the underlying cause – probably a congenital heart defect.

“Derrick [...] strange form of the flu [...] sexual activity”

HIV initially presents with flu-like symptoms, and then lies dormant for years before re-emerging as AIDS.

“David [...] several different colds [...] throat, you observe red, irritated and inflamed tissues.”

    Chronic bronchitis?

“burning pain in the “pit of his stomach,” [...] after eating and abating after drinking a glass of milk. [...] epigastric region”

    Gallstones?

    Paul asks…

    Frivolous lawsuits…?

A man called his attorney and asked him a few questions.

“Is it true that people are suing tobacco companies for causing everyone cancer?”

“Yep, that’s true” confirmed his lawyer.

“And is it true that people are suing fast food restaurants now for making high-fat burgers and fries that are clogging their arteries and making them gain weight?”

    “It’s true,” confirmed his lawyer.

“And there was a woman once, who sued McDonalds because her coffee was too hot and she burned herself when she spilled it?”

“Yes, that’s right,” the lawyer confirmed.

“And wasn’t there a guy who killed someone and got off because he ate too many Twinkies?”

“Yes, there was such a case.” the lawyer replied.

“And wasn’t there some football player who sued his college because he still couldn’t read after they graduated him?”

“Yes, yes, there was.” said the lawyer, before saying, “Look sir, I’m rather busy here. Is there a point to your asking me all these questions?”

“What I want to know is,” the man finally said, “Can I sue Budweiser for all the ugly women I’ve slept with?”

Tammy J. Answer Your Question About Lose Fat Faster

    February 20th, 2012

    John asks…

To lose fat and man boobs, should I be running faster and in shorter sessions or slower in longer sessions?

I want to lose some fat and my man boobs. I was wondering should I be running faster in short sessions or slower in long sessions?

    Tammy J. answers:

I don’t really know about running but if you want to lose fat then you should run and also start weight lifting. Muscle burns fat the fastest so if you balance that and running then you should be fine. You should also try to avoid fatty foods and eat often but not in large amounts. So eat about every 2-3 hours, run, lift weights and you should be good.

    Richard asks…

When running to lose fat is it better to run slower or faster?

When you run is better to run at a slower pace to lose stomach fat or a higher pace. On my treadmill 5.6 5.7 is a jog and it says it takes a little over 10:42 for a mile. around 6.3–6.6 is faster and takes about 9:30 for a mile.

what would be better in general a slower run or faster?

    Tammy J. answers:

What you are trying to ask is whether you should be running aerobically or anaerobically. In aerobic running, it is a fairly comfortable pace, in which you can maintain conversation easily. If you are running anaerobically, you are running at a pace that is beyond your fitness level, and it will be a struggle to hold that pace for a long time.

The best thing to do would be to run at an anaerobic pace for as long as you can, until you start to feel your legs get tired/sore (this is a build-up of lactic acid). Then slow down to an extremly light jog, until your breathing is ALMOST back to normal. At this point, you then repeat the anaerobic, fast pace. I would do this anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on your fitness.

*the reason why anaerobic running will burn more body fat is because running at a pace beyond your fitness level will cause your body to burn energy much quicker. When there is no energy stores for your body to seep from, it begins buring fat.

Tammy J. Answer Your Question About Fat Burning Diet Plan Meals

    February 20th, 2012

    Carol asks…

Is my diet and exercise routine good?

Hi. Well I’m 14 years old, 5 feet and 9 and a half inches tall, and around 180 pounds. I’d like to drop my weight to around 160 while at the same time, gain muscle. Currently, i eat a bowl of kashi cereal and a boiled egg for breakfast at 7:10 AM, a 6 inch subway sandwich consisting of turkey breast, tomatoes and lettuce at 2:00 PM, and then ill eat another 6 inch subway consisting of the same stuff at 7:00 PM. Should I eat some tinier meals somewhere from 7-2 or from 2-7? If so, please tell me what. As for exercises, I usually play handball for an hour or two after school and i usually do 2reps of bicep/hammer/tricep curls, 2 sets of crunches and obliques, and 15-25 pushups. On saturdays and sundays, i usually run intervals on the treadmills burning from between 250-400 calories in 15-20 minutes. I also do all the above exercises along with 4 sets of 10 reps each of leg presses (370lbs/rep)), 2 sets of 15 reps each of some exercise where i pull a bar down to workout my back (70 pounds/rep), and another machine for pecs but i usually dont feel anything on my chest even after doing many reps. This is the schedule I’m going to follow, but I want to know if its good and if its not, please leave suggestions. Also, I plan on eating at least one fat meal a week since I know I can’t control myself. Anyways, please leave some comemnts on whether or not my routine and diet sounds good. Thank you and have a wonderful Christmas!

P.S. IF you know any good chest workouts, please tell me . Also is drinking milk a good thing for losing weight while bulking up?

    George asks…

diet/workout/suplements for gaining lean muscle mass?

Time Span: 2 Months (May 1st – July 1st) its about a 9 week long period.

    Goals:
    1) Gain about 10-15 lbs of lean muscle if i can gain 20lbs of lean muscle that would be awesome
    2) Cut 2.5 – 5 percent body fat.

im 6’5 and weight between 180-185lbs, i have a slim build but i know i can put on muscle no problem with the right diet/workout/supplement plan. i would like to get some Advice on my plan for the diet and workout to achieve my goals. also i dont usually take supplements so if i can get some advice about that i would appreciate it.

    Diet:
i know that eating is key when it comes to putting on mass, i know also that it must be good healthy food. my plan is to split up 4000-4500 calories into 6 meals a day, one meal every 3 hours. the content of the meals im going to try to use these guide lines 30% protein 20% fats and 50% carbs. is this a good diet plan for lean muscle mass gaining?

    Workout plan:
since ill only have 9 weeks i plan to split up the work out into 3-3week cycles. Switching up the exercises routine every 3 weeks, not only do i plan on switching up the exercises within each day but i also plan on switching up the days i work out each set of muscles. i heard muscle confusion is good and helps prevent a plateau. One thing that i have done in the past is superset my workouts and i felt like it was helping me build lean muscle and burning fat. Im thinking ill work out 5 or 6 days a week giving me at least 4-5 days break Between muscle groups. What do you guys think of this workout?

    Supplements:
the only supplements i have ever taken are whey protein shakes with peanut butter and bananas, and about a year ago i was taking krealkylin and i feel like that helped out with lean muscle mass gains. i went to GNC and they recommended some stuff called AMP amplified Mass XXX, does anyone know if that stuff is any good? this is the section that i could use the most help with im not to experienced when it comes to supplements to help me in the process so the more input i can get the better.

    Tammy J. answers:

Sounds like you know your stuff and have set out a very decent plan of attack.

    Diet:
Don’t forget to drink a lot of water (you probably know that and just didn’t write it down). Make sure those carbs are of the complex variety. Don’t be afraid of raw eggs; if they are free range organic, there is virtually no health risk and they are an amazing source of nutrients and protein. You probably know all the many sources of top protein. Just make sure you get a fair amount of it from oily fish, on top of the lean meat, poultry, beans etc. You will be eating.

    Workout:
You’ve got it right about muscle confusion, but don’t take it too far, never letting your body do an exercise twice! Stick to compound exercises. Remember that boosting your testosterone and lifting maximum weight is far more effective than hitting each individual muscle. The following compound, full-body workout formula is great, even for experienced trainers, and would make a good phase of your plan:

    Compound Leg exercise (squats etc.)
    Compound Push (Bench Press etc.)
Compound Pull (Barbell bent-over Rows etc.)
Compound Shoulder exercise (Barbell overhead press etc.)
    Isolation (Bench dips etc.)
    Isolation (Bicep Curls etc.)

    Supplements:
You will need supplements to give you an edge, but they’re the least important of the three. Maximuscle produce some of the highest quality products on the market. Google them.

    Best of luck!
